Hello everyone. I love genealogy. I started working on my family tree about 2 years ago & what a ride! LOL! I found out that I had an uncle I was completely unaware of, that my ancestors have been persecuted for their religious beliefs for centuries (Why should I be any different, right? ), I come from a long line of pirates - even if they didn't refer to themselves as that, that many of my Dutch ancestors settled Manhattan, etc. It a bit addictive, as any genealogist will attest to. However, it is truly rewarding & comforting at the same time. ;D So, has anyone else been bitten by the genealogy bug? Sincerely, Laurasia

Hi, I'm new I'm next to obsessed with this topic. If anyone wants help I'll be willing to provide some links. I've found several famous ancestors as well. That's always a bonus.

Hello Eli. Well, it's nice to finally have another genealogist amongst us. LOL! It really is addictive. I can stop for a little while (usually when I'm too busy to devote enough time to it ), but I always end up starting it again. Sincerely, Laurasia

This is a very interesting subject for me, but alas, I have run into quite a few problems. Half of my ancestry comes from Eastern Europe, and the records over there are either non-existent, or you have to know the languages(which are VERY hard to grasp). The other half of my ancestry is such a common last name that I canot get any real good leads on it. Oh well, woe is me.

Hi Brandybuck.
Boy did you say a mouthful. Do you realize that the first "surname" that your Aunt gave me for your great-grandmother was actually the Hungarian word for "county"? It was the name of the place that she lived, not her name! The only reason that I even realized it is that I was looking at a detailed map of old Hungary trying to find some more info about your family & noticed that your great-grandmothers "surname" was plastered all over it. I finally found a translator that would let me translate one Hungarian word at a time, so I gave it a try. Lo & behold the English translation was "county"! LOL! ;D
Sincerely, Laurasia

Laurasia, Now you see exactly what I am talking about!! Even my own family cannot get it straight. It was more than likely a simple mistake, but to us it caused an avalanche of problems, did it not?

*Grins* Haha! I have a book about my family history, now all I have to do is go grab it from my father so I can make a copy of it.
Yours truthfully, Matthius

I am interested in geneology, but I don't really know where to start. My ancestors were so scattered, we're fromso many different countries, and we don't even know all of them. One of my dad's father for example knows his family has been in the US for a very long time but has no idea where they came from or when. When my mother's father died, some distant relation of mine sent us some information on our family tree that she had tracked down. I found out someone way back in my family fought in the Revolutionary War, but I don't think I'm related to anyone particularly famouse though. For a while we thought we might be related to Ralph Waldo Emmerson because we had all these family albums from my dad's great aunt, but it turned out they were from one of her best friends! oh well. we're still connected, sort of.

My mother has been doing a trace back on our family tree. I think she's officially gotten back about 300 years on her side of the family and slightly further than that on my dad's. My family is all from Scotland and apparently my dad's side of the family goes back to the 11th century, and also has gypse roots in it. Which I think is pretty cool.

Hi Kirsty. That's great! It's fascinating isn't it? I've traced my father's side back quite some way on both his paternal & maternal sides. I haven't worked on it for quite some time now though & can't recall exactly how far back I've gotten. Pretty darn far though. Most of my ancestry is Dutch, with their predecessors coming from France. The fled to Amsterdam while being persecuted for being Huguenots (Protestants). Generations later, when the Dutch settled their colony in America, many of the people/families that left to live there were ancestors of mine. Sincerely, Laurasia

Yeah it is pretty cool.
Do you remember the movie Braveheart? We found out that members of our clan actually fought in that war!!! Soo cool haha
My parents are both scottish. My dad has a thick head of dark brown hair and in the summer time his skin gets so dark he looks almost arabian or east indian. We always wondered why everyone else in our family got the pasty white skin LOL and my dad got the georgous dark skin, hair and eyes. When my mother started doing research into it we found out that my dad's side of the family has strong gypsie roots from either Romania or Egypt. Which totally explains his naturally dark skin in the summer.

Hi Kirsty. I love that movie. Definately cool. That just proves the type of strength that you have running through your veins. Isn't it great when you're able to figure out those little types of "mysteries" through your genealogical research? Sincerely, Laurasia

So, they where councelors of the emperor. I dont know much really.

Theodora, Do you mean the Byzantine Empire dear? Mostly an Eastern-European stronghold, greatly influenced by the Catholic Church. The Byzantine Empire was very powerful for a few hundred years until it gave way to the Renaissance Age in (I believe) the late1300's- late 1400's.
