A few weeks ago, I heard this... noise. My first thought was something had happened to the computer, which was incredibly stupid.
My second thought was of that death-watch bettle from "Practical Magic", but it was more of a howl than a tick. It scared the you-know-what out of me, I'll tell you that.
I tried calling for my parents, but being who they are, didn't pay me any attention. You'd think that at around midnight they'd pay attention to the sound of "(Scared child) Dad? Daddy?" at their door.
I checked on the cats that were in the house, since a friend of mine told me that cats make strange noises before they die (from personal experiance), but they were okay.
A few hours later I heard it again, only it was further away. Still terrified me, though, straight to my very core. Again, I tired calling for the parents, with the same result.
I have to say, it almost sounded what I would expect a banshie to sound like.
Anyone know?

Hello EBA.
Wow. I really don't know what to say about that. Was it very long ago? Could it had been the wind or something similar? I've never just had a howl come out of nowhere, so I don't really know what to say.
Sincerely, Laurasia

It happened about three weeks ago, I think. And I know the wind when it comes to this house. I've lived in it since I was two.
The thought of it still terrifies me, though.

I am stumped on this one as well. Did you hear anything right before or right after the howl? I don't know if you live in a very populated area or not. I live in a very rural area, and I hear all sorts of noises in the night from various animals. Sometimes when an animal is afraid, or is fighting for territory, it can make some awful sounds.

If you're in a highly wooded area or some other "highly natural" area it very well have been some animal out in the night. I have been scared out of my wits by some of the things that I hear out in the woods at night. Bears, screech owls, deer, wolves, coyotes etc. Sincerely, Laurasia

Cats, Cats make a horrible screeching, howling sound when they get into fights with other cats or encounter something that scares them. I've heard my cat make this sound numerous times. I also have a couple of strays that stay under my house and have heard them make the same sound usually when they are in heat and are approached by a male cat.

I have lived with cats since I was in utero. I know all the noises cats make.
I'm not in a wooded area, just the typical southern suburb in Georgia.

Considering that you are in the suburbs, and not a vastly wooded area, that does kind of narrow things down. I remember from living in the suburbs that what we got a lot of in the neighborhood were racoons. Racoons fight constantly over territory, and especially food (more than likely from people's ripped garbage bags.. Obviously, I did not hear the noise that you heard, but having heard racoons fight before, they can sound really wicked.

Laiwing The last post on this thread was a few months ago so i dont know if you discovered what it was that made the noise.Il share this any here in case it helps. Accounts of the Banshee are very commonlplace in ireland , where i live. A friend of mine , Eve , a credible sane person and not one given to exaggerations heard something similar when she was younger and is convinced it was the Banshee. The wailing was so loud it woke her up , but not her brother who shared the bedroom or any of her family in the house either. They live in a housing estate too. She said it was unlike any other crying shes ever heard and in full volume , she was paralyzed in terror and knew it was something supernatural but was too afraid to look out the window . Why no one else could hear a voice like an Aira from an opera in the middle of the night, blasting through the neighbourhood still mystifies her. Im not sure if this helps clarify it but i just thought it might. yours sincerely Rowan
