Matthias's post, "Craft Knife" got me thinking about athames even though I don't actually use one. (I always thought my parents would get a little suspicious if I bought/ordered/ or kept a nice, double edged dagger in my room.) Do you actually use a separate knife for cutting things, and use the athame for only symbolic things? It seems unnecessary to me; I mean, maybe it's not a good idea to use the ritual knife to cut steak or give yourself a hair cut, but I don't really see much of a reason to not use it for, say, cutting an herb for a spell. But then again, I am not one for rules of any sort, and I know a lot of people follow this one. What are your thoughts?

I believe the same as you. In fact, my athame is not a true atame (in the proper sense) at all...it is a small letter opener reproduction of Excalibur. I have found it to work very well for me every time, and see? It is not even a knife. LOL. I believe that as long as you charge it with your own thoughts, wishes and dreams (in other words your personal power), that you could use anything as an athame. As for the part of cutting herbs, a kitchen knife does the trick just fine. I do not like ritualization and rules either.

Hi Aelish. Once again I have to echo Brandybuck. My "athame" is also a letter opener. In fact it's not even a fancy one like hers, it's just a plain silver one with no ornamentation. And if it were sharp enough, you can bet that I would use it for other things within my craft practice. Sincerely, Laurasia
