Well, I just got home from watching this movie. It was great. Of course, I've always been a sucker for period/war movies. So, has anyone else seen this film & did you like it. (By the way, the entire time I was watching the film I kept being bothered by the actor playing Guy. I simply could not place him, even though I recognized him intensely. You should have seen my face when I realized it was Martin Csokas! I couldn't believe that it was Celeborn from Lord of the Rings I was unable to place him. He looks a LOT different with dark hair & facial hair. LOL!) Sincerely, Laurasia

I definitly loved this movie! I think Orlando Bloom really showed his skill for playing a character who is constantly fighting his own demons, as well as proving his valor and loyalty. Balian is truly one of my favorite characters.

Ok this is an old thread; but I loved this movie! And actually I only know one other person who did, for some reason everyone I know hated it. Do you know how historically acurate it was? I don't really know anything about that time period. I liked the movie, though. I don't think movies have to be totally acurate to be good anyway, so long as they don't completely misrepresent something or someone.

Hi Aelish. Well, I do know that King Baldwin, Balian, Guy of Lusignan, Reynauld (Reginald of Châtillon in real life), Sibylla & Saladin were real people. Though some of the roles have been altered a bit in the movie. Balian did not come from France. Baldwin named his young nephew (Sibylla's son from her first marriage - he was 5 years old) as his heir, rather than Guy. He had first tried to get his sisters marriage to him annulled (against his sisters wishes) so he would have no claim to the throne, but he was unable to achieve that. Anyway, this kid reigned for a rather short period of 3 years time before he died. After that, with the full support of his wife & Reynauld (Reginald), Guy was named King. However, as the movie depicted, he was captured by Saladin at the battle of Hattin. He was released 1 year later though & beseiged & retook the small kingdom of Acre. After Sibylla died he was forced to resign his title & was given the Island of Cyprus to rule over. He was King of Cyprus for 2 years, but the Lusginan's ruled Cyprus for some time. The real Balian's life was quite different from the movie. There is a very good page that explains what the real Balians' life was like & compares it to the one in the movie as well (as well as contains links to the true stories behind most of the other people). Use this link to get there... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balian_of_IbelinSincerely, Laurasia

Wow, quite an interesting read there, dear. Thank you very much for putting up the information. I never realized that the historical Balian and the fictionalized Balian were so similar. Like I always say, you learn something new everyday, right?

I think the movie was well filmed with very realistic battle scenes.....

I think the movie was well filmed with very realistic battle scenes..... It was violent of course, but it didn't seem like it was bloody for the sake of being bloody, as some movies are. It showed battle in a pretty disturbing light, but realistically so. I hate movies where it seems that they just stuck in violence for no reason other than it's what some people want to see. And also it didn't romanticize battle too much, they didn't make it look like a good and glorious thing, as in some movies that don't convey the reality of battle. ~Aelish~

I agree..the battles depicted in this movie show the struggle between both sides, who long so desperately to avoid war. With the exception of Guy, battle is pretty much avoided due to good negotiations between the kings. That is what I liked...both countries could respect one another.

Hi Brandybuck.
I definately have to agree with you there. It was nice to see a film that doesn't show either countries ruler in a "better light". Neither Baldwin nor Saladin were bad kings/rulers. Neither wanted to go to war with the other. Until, as you mentioned, Guy de Lusignan broke the peace truce so horrifically & forced Saladin's hand.
Sincerely, Laurasia

I absoultly adored that movie! I have no idea why it did so bad at the box office, other than the running time.
I work at Movie Gallery, so when that film came out on DVD, I recomeneded that film to everyone who walked in the door. I got at least twenty thank yous from people for suggesting that film.
I think it was that movie that cemented my status as "If she says it's bad, it must be awful."
