I have been watching "A Haunted" and I am trying to understand what ghosts are. Some people say they are just recordings from the past, others say they are spirits of the dead and others demons pretending to be people that have died. I am trying to keep an open mind and find out what they really are.
My question is why are there still on Earth? Why dont' they moved on to the after life? What makes them stay behind?

These are questions that have plagued investigators for a long time. The popular theory is that they are beings made up of pure energy that the soul leaves behind. Many times, it turns out that it is nothing more than an "imprint" of a scene that played out in the person's life, and not a true haunting at all. For example, take the two ladies who stepped out of an elevator in a high rise building, and into a vision of a Civil War hospital. The location of the high rise had been a Civil War hospital in the 1800's. The energy that remains at the location traps the memories of all that had happened there, so a kind of playback takes place...but not an "intelligent" haunting.
Then of course there are evil spirits who were never human..they are what most people tend to call demons. Demons are usually exorcised from the place by an experienced priest or priestess.

Yes I often wonder if ghost are just recordings of the past. Its like their story is played out over and over again like a video tape.

They can be any of these things. It is up to an investigator to make the distinction between them. If you have cable or sattelite television than I highly recommend that you start watching the show "Ghost Hunters" on the SciFi channel. Their new season begins Wed. September 26th at 7 PM EST. You can also check out their website, TAPS: The Atlantic Paranormal Society, & read articles & other information on the subject there.
